V+A Waterfront Masterplan

As with docklands all over the world, the coming of containerisation saw the traditional Victoria & Alfred Waterfront port in Cape Town lose much of its commerce. The City initiated a scheme for reconfiguring it as a mixed-use and tourist zone, building on the attraction of its historic maritime character.

A significant but subtle enlargement of an existing retail mall was proposed, while new avenues, broadways and paths were used to improve interlinking between the site’s extremities and centre, providing vistas from deep within the site, reconnecting the area to the sea and the city. Taken together, the new proposals added life to both the land and water, and enhanced the V&A Waterfront’s growing reputation among the world’s foremost dockland developments
